Janji Joni

I actually watched this movie last Monday, utilizing that nomat thingy in Wijaya with my sister. I have heard pretty good reviews about this one, so off I go. The main idea of Janji Joni was pretty creative, who would have thought there would be a movie about the movie roll delivery guy? Another reason I watched this movie was to see the gorgeous Mariana Renata, she's probably not that good of an actress and Joko Anwar (the director) did well to minimize her appearance to compensate with her acting skill.

The start was pretty promising with Joni (Nicholas Saputra) explaining about what he does and how it "affects" the movie industry. His own rendition of 10 types of cinema audiences was pretty good too. Joni then met this gorgeous actress Angelique (Mariana for sure) who was watching a movie with her detail-freak then-boyfriend Otto (Surya Saputra). Angelique promised Joni to give out her name if Joni would able to deliver the movie roll on-time which shouldn't be tough at all. However, Everything seemed to be working against Joni as he faced a lot of adversity in delivering these movie rolls. His motorcycle got stolen when he was guiding a blind man crossing the street; then he ran across a boring cab driver whose wife was giving birth; then he was forced to do a cameo in a little movie directed by Ria Irawan; then his bag was stolen by Vonny (Rachel Maryam) who then sold it to an eccentric artist Adam Subandi (Sujiwo Tedjo). Did Joni able to deliver the movie roll on time? Did he manage to at least get to know Angelique?

When I watched Janji Joni, the first thing I noticed was that there were lots of solid cameo appearance by big name celebrity supported with solid scenario. Aming light up the screen in his 30 sec appearance. Noella Birowo was so hilarious as the telmi-audience with her husband Indra Birowo. Ria Irawan was a great fit as an eccentric director (SEX! ). Tantowi Yahya was pretty good too as the ginekolog, even though it's a bit predictable. Even Nia Dinata the producer appeared briefly as the "sok-tahu kritikus".

Overall Janji Joni was a very entertaining movie with a very good storyline. The plotting reminds me a bit of "Run, Lola Run" the cult classic. The formula of "the whole world against the main cast" reminds me of "Harold and Kumar go to White Castle" and many other movies. There was a little stuff that bugged me though, there seems to be something wrong with the timeframe (I'm not sure that Joni can come up with that many incident in such a short timeframe). As long as you watch the movie to be entertained it wouldn't be that much of a problem, it entertains. 8/10
